This is a striking plate of scallop shell fossils for sale. The specimen, personally collected by shop owner Bryan Roberts, is from the Pliocene-age Tamiami Formation and is roughly 4 million years old. The Latin name of the fossils is Pecten (Plagioctenium) subventricosus and close relatives of these mollusks can be found in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico today. The plate was collected near Venice, Florida on a land site where an excavation briefly exposed a small pocket of the fossils.
The plate measures 8.5" x 10.5" x 2.5" (max dimensions) and weighs 8.5 lbs. It comes with an acrylic display stand that elevates the piece by about 2" and will make an excellent addition to any fossil collection. It also will make a great gift for anyone interested in fossils and geology and even serve as an eye-catching objet d'art.
