We are pleased to offer a vibrant Francesco Spicuzza oil painting for sale. Born in Sicily in 1883, Spicuzza studied art in Milwaukee and eventually became one of Wisconsin's best known painters. He exhibited extensively and won a gold medal at the Milwaukee Art Institute in 1922. He is represented in numerous private and public collections, including those of the St. Paul Institute of Art and the Milwaukee Museum of Art. He was best known for his beach scenes and scenes of Cedar Lake, where he and his family eventually bought a second home.
This work is likely a Cedar Lake view and is rendered in the artist's typical cool blue palette. The spontaneous nature of the work suggests that it was perhaps painted ala prima (i.e. start to finish in one sitting) and perhaps even done en plein air (French for "out of doors"). The work is an oil on board and measures 6.5" x 8.25" unframed and 13.25" x 15" framed. The frame is a hand-carved and hand-gilded Hackman frame that was made expressly for the work about 20 years ago. The work is signed lower left and both it and the frame are in excellent condition. The work is from a private collection and has never before been offered for sale in the art market.
