Offered is a lovely post-impressionist figurative work by Swedish painter Rune Person (1914-1990). Person trained at the academy of Otte Skold and also at the Art Academy of Stockholm. He worked in France as well and his work typically shows heavy French post-impressionist influence. Person produced a broad range of work, including landscapes, still lifes, interior scenes, and figurative pieces. He almost invariably used a distinctive technique of incorporating elements of bare painting surface, either canvas or board, into the painting's construction. The artist is represented in several museum collections, including those of Osterlund and Lulea.
This work is an oil on board that depicts a young woman in a beret seated at a table and reading a book. Despite an economy of detail, Person has wonderfully captured the quiet of the moment in this painting. The French post-impressionist influence mentioned above is particularly evident in this work, both in technique and subject matter. The painting measures 26.5" x 16" unframed and 32" x 21.5" framed. The painting is signed lower left and probably dates to c. 1945-50.. The gold broken-leaf frame is new and both it and the painting are in excellent, ready-to-hang condition.
