Offered is an atmospheric harbor scene by Hugo Ofverstrom (Swedish, 1900-1972). Ofverstrom was born in Kungälv, Sweden and studied at the Valand Academy of Fine Art from 1919-1922. There, he trained under the well-known artist Birger Simonsson (1883-1938), who had in turn worked with Matisse in Paris. After completing his studies, Ofverstrom spent 5 years (1923-1928) in America before returning to Sweden, where he settled in Goteborg. Over the years, he developed a distinctive, increasingly loose impressionistic style characterized by vigorous brushwork and broken color. While Ofverstrom produced landscapes, still lifes, and coastal scenes, he is best known for his dynamic scenes of the Bohuslan Archipelago, especially the coastal villages with their rustic boat sheds and fishing boats.
This painting is an outstanding example of Ofverstrom's mature impressionist style. The work is an oil on panel, signed lower left, that measures 13.5" high X 10.5" wide unframed and 18.25" X 15.25" wide framed. The pale gold frame is new and both it and the painting are in excellent condition.
