A rather special antique pendant, originating from Scotland and dating back to the late Georgian era, circa 1820- 1830!
The Maltese cross pendant boasts triangular shaped brown flat-top cairngorm quartz gems, along with little Scottish thistle profiles in between. Given the provenance of the pendant, the cairngorm quartz, also known as smoky quartz, were likely sourced in the 19th century from the Cairngorms, a mountain range in the eastern Scottish Highlands, hence the title 'Cairngorm quartz'. Contrasting beautifully in the centre is one 6.5mm natural half pearl, more than likely from the famous Tay or Isla rivers in Scotland. The cairngorm quartz are enhanced by the use of foil beneath each gem, adding a further glow face up. The gems are held in place by a series of small prongs. The reverse side of the piece reveals a rounded and smooth closed- back rose gold setting, typical of this era.
The Maltese cross is the cross symbol associated with the Order of St. John since 1567, with the traditional Knights Hospitaller and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and by extension with the island of Malta. The Maltese cross was prevalent in the fashion scene during the 18th century, and this alternative English form has become timeless in the whims of adornment.
The gold has been XRF tested to 8k, there are no stamps evident which is not unusual for this era. The colour gold is the beautiful warm rose hue. A jump ring attaches to top allowing easy access for chain of your choice. Total length including jump ring measures 1 1/2" inches.
