A wonderful garnet and pearl pendant dating back to the Victorian era, circa 1880! The detailed and delicate style indicative of the Etruscan Revival period, popularized in Europe. A delightful and juicy wine red, pear-shape cabochon garnet is classically framed with a scrolled wire-work border and twenty-two lustrous seed pearls. Nine dancing and swinging tassels elegantly drape from a hinged u-shaped rail. A grooved upside down V-shaped bail attaches to top- allowing a 3mm thick chain to slide through.
The cabochon garnet measures approx 13.40mm x 9.40mm, estimated weight is 8.13 carats. It is a pretty wine-red colour with a strong purple hue, some natural inclusions are seen internally under magnification. There is a scratch to surface of garnet, it is placed across middle side of garnet- seen under strong lighting and difficult to detect to an unaided eye.
There are twenty-two 2.20mm- 2.50mm seed pearls- all appear original and are a white to silver-white colour. The seed pearls are more than likely natural as cultured pearls were not invented until later - however an x ray test has not been carried out to confirm.
No stamps can be seen to pendant, an xrf test indicates 9K gold. The colour is the lovely antique rose yellow hue. Either a rose or yellow gold necklace may suit this pendant.
A gorgeous hand-crafted 19th century pendant! Perhaps one for the garnet lover.. or perhaps a gift for the January birthstone...
