A lovely example of Antique Greenstone! This brooch dates back to circa 1900 or so, the piece is more than likely from New Zealand, where many greenstone pieces like this originate from. The colour of the greenstone is of a strong deep green (almost black at a distance) with the edges displaying slightly lighter vein-type inclusions.

Wrapped near each end of greenstone is a 4mm wide slither of 9ct gold which is decorated with a lovely hand-engraved pattern. The metal pin and 'C' hook on the reverse is all in working order.

Greenstone or Pounami (which is the Maori name) refers to several types of hard, durable nephrite jade, bowenite or serpentine stone found in Southern New Zealand. Jewellery and other decorative items made from gold and pounamu were particularly fashionable in New Zealand in the Victorian and Edwardian years in the late 19th and early 20th century.
