History of Santo Domingo Depression Era jewelry: Due to the hardship involved in gathering jewelry making materials during the 1920-30s Depression. Artist from Santo Domingo Pueblo would use materials that were readily available or easy to come by. Items such as battery casings, old vinyl records, red, white and yellow plastic cups, plates, forks, spoons, hair combs, bone and turquoise chips were used to make affordable tourist jewelry. Originating in the 1930 but sold well into the 1950s these pieces are now the focus of museum collections and gallery showings.
