On August 28, 1984, religious leader Ben Kallestewa testified before Senator Barry Goldwater to help protect Zuni sacred lands: “My name is Ben Kallestewa. I am the head of all the Zuni religious Kachina dances and religious activities that have been going on for years and years as taught by our forefathers. We have continued these religious activities from generation to generation . . . The only reason that we want these religious mountains is to keep on our tradition as our forefathers have been doing for years . . . We pray for the people of all the world . . . So almost every day we go down there and pray and hope that this world will come to peace. That is what our religion is all about.”
