This Superb Antique Work Box Really is a Rare Find. A Fine and Delightful Regency Work Box Circa 1830.
A rare and delightful Regency work box in excellent condition. The work box was made around 1830, most probably in France. The outer panels have been covered in a soft russet coloured velvet and each panel has been edged with a decorative gilt trim. The base of the box also has decorative panels of leaves and swags in gilt. The lid is divided into four panels with russet coloured velvet and gilt decorative trim and an ornamental pineapple type knob to the top. Inside the lid is a mirror measuring 5.75" x 3.5" faced with gilt passe partout trim and all in excellent condition.
The inner part of the work box has been lined in pale duck egg blue watered silk and at the base, there is the very unusual addition of a reverse glass picture of a young lady skipping while a gentleman plays a tune. Again all trimmed with gilt passe-partout trim.
The box measures 7" long x 5" wide and stands 6.5" tall.
This really is a treasure, the condition is amazing for the age of the box, it has obviously been cherished over the years. Inside the box is in excellent condition too. My photos cannot really do this box justice.
