An excellent 19th century Mauchline ware pincushion made by the Smith family in Mauchline in Scotland during the 19th
century, It measures 2" long and has a padded area at each end covered in red velvet for storing pin. It is in good condition.

This particular example has a transfer of historically famous, Dunstaffnage Castle. The castle is one of Scotland's oldest and
situated in Oban, Argyll. The castle guards the seaward approach from the Firth of Lorn and the Pass of Brander which is
the heart of Scotland.

The castle was built before 1240 and amongst others is famous for Robert the Bruce besieging the castle around 1308. The
castle remained in Royal hands until it passed to the Campbell earls in the 1460's. From then until the last Jacobite rising in
1745 it is linked with constant struggles between the Campbells and the Crown. In 1746 the castle welcomed one of its most
famous guests - Flora MacDonald. She was going to visit her brother and met up with Bonnie Prince Charlie fleeing the Red
Coats following his defeat at the battle of Culloden. To help him escape she helped him dress as her maid, Betty Burke but
Flora was arrested and taken to the castle for a few days and then on to London.
