The story of Engelbert started in 1878 when Heribert Engelbert was born. He became interested in the goldsmith profession early on, and after working as a salesman in the jewellery firm of Dahlgren & Co., he established AB Heribert Engelbert in 1920.
His son Stig took over the business soon after completing his training as a goldsmith. In the late 1940s we started manufacturing for ourselves when Stig founded the studio Stigbert. Thus began a new era in Swedish art jewellery using the Scandinavian design language. Typical patterns from this time were characterized by straight geometric shapes, shiny surfaces and faceted rock crystals.
In 1962, after Stig Engelbert passed away, his sons Lars and Peter Engelbert took over the business. The brothers had training in goldsmithing in Germany and gemology in London, to name just some of their skills. Lars wanted to try out the American market and went to the United States in 1965, where he began working for the prestigious Mario Buccelati in New York. Lars and Peter then opened their own office on Fifth Avenue in New York in 1966.
After about five years’ successful marketing of Engelbert jewellery in the United States and Europe, the firm refocused its attention on the domestic market. The company concentrated on exclusive wedding and engagement rings, and jewels with a distinct Swedish design. These efforts bore fruit and in addition to gaining a unique market position in Sweden, our design was honoured with several awards including the 1994 “De Beers Diamonds-International Award”, the most prestigious award in jewellery design. The winning design was a bangle in yellow gold with 15.86 carats of diamonds in a streamer of white gold, one part of a larger collection that is still the backbone of the company’s production.
