Wonderful and very rare 20k gold jade brooch. Fully marked for sought after maker Wang Hing & Company, Hong Kong c 1930.
SIze: 2.75in / 7cm
Stone 10 x 8mm
Wang Hing & Company c 1920-40 began life producing jade objects; silver was to be its mainstay but it was certainly not the way the company started out. The Lo family were respected jade importers. Wang Hing also created gold jewellery items and, as with its silver, was consistent with the purity of gold it used. 20 carats was the standard Wang Hing maintained and the makers’ marks clearly attest to that standard. Almost all of the jewellery created by Wang Hing was made during the 20th century and probably can be attributed to the opening of the Hong Kong emporium on Queen’s Road. This jade and gold brooch is typical of the quality and style Wang Hing adopted. Ivory, ebony and even rattan are materials that were used in jewellery combinations with gold.
