Snuff boxes of silver were probably not made before about 1660. In the literature of the few countries where snuff taking was well established before that date -Italy, Spain and Ireland - silver boxes are not mentioned, while those of simpler materials such as shell and horn are often described. The earliest known description of silver snuff boxes occurs in 1665 in a poem published in Holland. In Europe snuff-taking culminated in leading circles in the 1770s, though certain circles continued to take snuff, even increasingly, foranother 100 years. This means that the number of quality snuff boxes of the rococo period is greater that that of any other period before or since. 19th century snuff boxes, was more often used for other purpose then snuff taking, i.e memorabilia, gifts (presentation boxes), jewellery, pills, etc.
