Antique Yomut Turkmen “button” Pendant made with silver 700 base plate , upper lower silver with copper decorative plate and 24+1 colored glass and gemstones. Considered as the most lavish,ornate and captivating of all Turkmen traditional jewelry. Yomut is considered a wonder in the world of traditional jewelry making. Although executed in relatively primitive methods and simple tools the craftsman reaches articulate level of details. A combination of elaborated geometrical divisions with symbolic ornamentation and details brings together the jewelry piece to emulate both richness extravagance and intrigue. It uses numerical symbolism (in our case the number 12) and in many cases has used Christian symbols into the crafting of objects done under Muslim rule of later centuries. It is worth mentioning that although mainly populated by Muslims there are until today also 9% Christians which carry the eastern Orthodox Church traditions,being so one can find old Christian embolism elements crafted into the jewelry.In addition the Turkmen kept many of their customs and beliefs from before The Islamic period, which were often implemented and expressed in jewelry.
