Katagami is the Japanese craft of making stencils for dying textiles and is usually associated with the city of Suzuka. The stencils were used for kimono printing but these days they are sold as artwork. The colors comes from the Japanese mulberry bark paper that has been pasted together with persimmon juice. This pieces dates from the Taisho Period 1912-1926. The stencil is matted and is titled "Your Family Crest" Coat -Of -Arms. There is plastic over the front but a large piece of it is missing at the bottom but the matte underneath is still very clean. The entire piece measures 8 X 10 and the stencil itself is 3 7/8" square.
