Utterly sublime, this beautiful, antique writing slope stands out for many reasons, two of the most important being the incredible condition and the superb quality!
Inlaid with intricate mother of pearl, woods and abalone, the sheer quality of this piece just oozes from every detail. This is a box that has hosted the stationery of a very well-to-do household in its time. The original makers label, Taulin of Paris, being testament to the grand provenance of its origin.
Everything is just as it should be with this box, over a hundred years since its manufacture and yet the condition belies its age. Complete, down to the original paper makers label, pair of original glass, brass topped inkwells, removable pen tray and incredibly, even the original key!
Boxes like this one are becoming harder and harder to find in even world-weary condition, one as good as this is a rarity indeed!
The stunning serpentine shape of the box is set off beautifully and protected by the brass banding around the edges of the piece. The brass is echoed on the inside with the tops of the inkwells, hinges, lock mechanism and the knob to the cover of the pen tray, all being matching.
The deep purple velvet on the writing slope shows wear to the crease and also general signs of use. It is to be expected with the age and it's a charming sign that the box has been used for its practical purpose as well as having obviously been cherished.
There is space for stationery or letters under the slope and stamps, sealing wax etc along side the inkwell compartments.
We are really very excited to be able to offer the box forward and we hope that you will love it as much as we do.
