So eye catching, this engraving has been skilfully hand coloured, sometime in the early 19th century.
I believe that the insect depicted is a type of wasp, possibly a cicada killer, but I am not an entomologist so I can't identify it for definite.
These engravings were hand coloured in watercolour by artists and were often part of botanical sets, helping gardeners to identify pests and beneficial insects in their gardens.
If you are a fan of the natural world you cannot help but be intrigued by the detail in this particular etching.
Sympathetically reframed in the early 20th Century in Germany. The picture is set off beautifully with a cream mount. The frame shows a few signs of wear and age but adds to the charm of the piece in our opinion. Condition is otherwise very very good, with the colours still vibrant to the painting.
Please see the photographs for clarification.
