This handsome box with deep relief figures portraying the drama of 19th century French country life. It was made of silver plate on copper, and dates from the Napoleon III period, 1860.
The box is made up of five framed panels each with animated scenes depicting French country life in the mid 19th century and each telling their story. standing on four bun feet.
The scene on the top of the lid features a French farm yard with chickens, haystack and an old French Charente farm cart, a young farming couple are returning home from the fields carrying a scythe and have a terrier dog running along beside them, an older lady (probably la grand-mère) is sat on a bench attending a young child.At the end of the bench are the initials CAL and also they are repeated at the end of the bench on the front scene.
The other four panels all have individual scenes featuring workers relaxing after the hard toil of that years harvest, there are children playing, beer and wine flowing as the people celebrate the yield.
This box would have been given as a present for either a wedding, coming of age, retirement etc. to bestow health wealth and happiness.
Inside has the original buttoned turquoise silk lining and is in good condition considering the age.
The box is in very good condition with the hint of copper giving warmth to all it's characters.
