A very beautiful and rare 1866 antique mourning wreath in a shadow box frame. The Biedermeier piece with an ebonized wood frame and gilt detail still has the original more than 150 year old glass and bronze hanger / hook. The flower wreath appears to be made of handmade silk flowers with beads and silk embroidered ribbons. What makes this piece so very special is the hand written letter affixed to the center of the wreath. We have translated it to the best of our abilities, as it is in old German script. It is written in the first person "I" and is a poem about being near God in heaven. It gives the perspective that the deceased 14 year old girl has written it. Her name: Christin Lillenbeck from Vahlhausen (near Detmold in Germany) born on the 15th of April 1852 and died on the 17th of May 1866.
Here is our Translation (it has some missing parts, but it summarizes the Poem quite well):
"My time is over now. I am full of happiness and enjoyment, but you my loved ones are standing there so full of freight. Why are you getting so upset, instead of feeling good. Now you shout out in pain, my elders and parents - over me. The loved ones are patiently carrying me to my grave. The Mother is crying and God is shouting for us. God expects us in death and life. Now decorate my casket with wreaths dearest parents and relatives, near ones, known ones and friends and thank God for his world."
