This beautiful Italian early baroque Statue depicts Jesus Christ. He has amazing movement in his clothing and looks almost real with his magnificently carved head, hands and body. It was made in the second half of the 17th Century. His amazing glass eyes make him appear very natural. He wears a green robe and a Gold (Gilt), red and blue cloth. He is completely carved out of wood.
The Stature is in good condition. It has a beautiful patina and comes un-restored with its original Polychrome color. Some of the original paint is missing, but we like to preserve our antiques as close to the original as possible. It can be restored without any problems. (PLEASE SEE PICTURES)
The way he holds his left hand is a very typical gesture. It represents the name of Jesus Christ. In Greek it is spelt ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, written using the English alphabet we get “ΙΗϹΟΥϹ ΧΡΙϹΤΟϹ”. The first letter and the last letter of each word, from left to right is written as ICXC. This known as a christogram, and is the abbreviated form of Jesus Christ. On the left hand each letter symbolises by the each finger. In iconography and in numerous paintings, sculptures and windows, Jesus will use this hand gesture, and basically it means his name, Jesus Christ.
It is 32 Inch tall by 16 Inch wide by 13 inch deep
