This beautiful - one of a kind - Hatbox / Chipbox / Bandbox is a rare 18th Century find and a Museum quality piece. It is completely made out of hand cut chipboard and is called " Spanschachtel " or " Hutschachtel " in Germany. It has not only been crafted solely of wood (no metal nails) but also magnificently handpainted. The side of the Lid and the Box are painted with intricate Polychrome Floral Designs and the top of the Lid depicts a typical 18th century romance scene. A gentleman in uniform court a Lady in a beautiful nature scene. It also shows a saying at the top "In der Welt is alles eitel - von Fuß an bis auf den Scheitel". In English it means "In the World everybody is vain - from the foot up to the parting (in the hair).
Measurements: 18" by 11 3/4" by 6 1/2"
Condition: The Box is in good condition. It has a few chips in the original Polychrome Paint and two small pieces of the wood edges are chipped. Very few antique wormholes (have been treated - just in case) Overall this box has Museum Quality.
