This magnificent antique polychrome delft tile from the the Netherlands is a true gem. It was made around 1630 and once was mounted as a fireplace decoration, or on a kitchen wall.
The flower seems to be some sort of daffodil. The tile was made from clay, tin glazed and hand painted - most likely in the city of Rotterdam. The flower motif is very typical for the 17th Century - anyhow this specific tile with a Flower on a turf in a circle band and polychrome is very rare. Colored tiles are a lot rarer than their blue and white or purple and white counterparts, for which Dutch Tiles are so well known.
Theme: Flower on a turf
Motive: Ox head corner motif
Measurements: circa 5 1/4” by 5 1/4"
