This beautiful Mini Brass Sculpture of Saint Peter was made in the late 19th Century. It is a typical Grand Tour Souvenir. It shows the 1st Pope sitting on a throne holding a key in his left hand while he raises his other hand pointing to heaven. On the socket are the Letters SP engraved. He has a hole which would fit a screw at the back of his head - maybe he used to have a halo attached to his head.
Saint Peter (Latin: Petrus), also known as Simon Peter was according to the New Testament one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, leaders of the early Christian Church. The Roman Catholic Church considers him to be the first Pope, ordained by Jesus in the "Rock of My Church" dialogue in Matthew 16:18. The ancient Christian churches all venerate Peter as a major saint and associate him with founding the Church of Antioch and later the Church in Rome, but differ about the authority of his various successors in present-day Christianity.
According to Catholic belief, Simon Peter was distinguished by Jesus to hold the first place of honor and authority. Also in Catholic belief, Peter was first bishop of Rome. Furthermore, they consider every bishop of Rome to be Peter's successor and the rightful superior of all other bishops. Although Peter never bore the title of "Pope", or "Vicar of Christ", in this sense the Catholic Church considers Peter the first Pope.
