This original early hand-colored original copper-plate engraving on heavy paper is a real beauty. It depicts The King Vulture ( Sarcoramphus papa ) plate Number III (3) of Johann Michael Seligmanns 'Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel'. He was a German artist and engraver best known for his ornithological artwork in "Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel" (Collection of various foreign and rare birds) which included plates based on the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards.

It was his version of "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History' and 'Natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands" by George Edwards and Mark Catesby. Later in the 18th century (1749), Seligmann re-engraved Catesby’s original folio-size work as well as plates by George Edwards (1694-1773), incorporating them into a nine-volume set in a smaller format. This print is from that work.

Seligmann's engravings often added small background scenes but the bird etchings were unchanged. Catesby or Edwards were credited in each plate as the original artist and the print legend was in Latin, French and German.

This beautiful copper engraving comes in a Vintage Wood frame with washed Gold detail.
