This beautiful Collage / Picture dates back to the 19th Century. It shows a bird - most likely a Thrush or Fieldfare - sitting on a branch. While the branch, tree and the whole background is painted the bird itself is completley made out of feathers. Made in Eger - a town of Bohemia - in circa 1820 it represents the typical Egerer "Federbild". Most likely inspired by Mexican Feather Pictures the Father Jerome Trötscher of Eger brought these typical Biedermeier art to Bohemia. From the late 18th Century until circa 1850 many of these unique art objects were made in Eger.
Typical the feather used to create a specific bird only came from an animal of the same species.
It very much represents the Continetal European Era of Biedermeier. Art during this time were characterized by the commitment to portray a sentimental and pious view of the world in a realistic way. Biedermeier themes reinforced feelings of security, "Gemütlichkeit", traditional pieties and simplicity, eschewing political and social commentary during the epoch.
