This is by far the best reproduction of a medieval piece I have seen. Made by the famous braziery Otto Hägemann of Hannover Germany in 1894 for the 700th anniversary of the grave opening of Saint Bernward in Hildesheim. It is an exact copy of the famous Lion Pricket Candlestick (circa 1250) from the Cathedral Treasury in Hildesheim. The original was shown in 2013 and 2014 at the Cloisters in NYC during the MET Exposition: "Medieval Treasures from Hildesheim". Hildesheim Cathedral has one of the most complete surviving ensembles of church furnishings and treasures in Europe, with many masterpieces made between 1000 and 1250. As a result, it was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1985.

Thanks to Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim (960–1022) / Saint Bernward, one of the greatest patrons of the arts in the Middle Ages, Hildesheim got this beautyful treasure. He was the thirteenth Bishop of Hildesheim from 993 until his death in 1022 and canonization in 1092.

The "Hildesheimer Leuchterlöwe" was - just like the original - casted out of Bronze (Copper Alloy) and engraved afterwards. Like the original it has a Pricket out of Iron (the one on our reproduction is smaller than the one on the original, but the large central pricket that dominates the original romanesque work is a modern restoration.) It has the exact measurements than the original Lion Candlestick (just the height differs because of the noted smaller Pricket). Due to irregularities during casting one of the candlestick arms is deattachable and it has a small patch on one side.

We attached a picture of the original 13th Century lion. The ring on the underside of the beast is a later addition, perhaps to allow it to be secured with a chain.

The portable three-light candelabrum in the form of a lion is unique, though it stands firmly in the Lower Saxon tradition of leonine works cast in copper alloy.
