This handmade German "Trachten" Hat is called a "Stülpchen". It comes from the Area around the city of Marburg in the state of Hesse, Germany.
It is a Cap of the Protestants (Lutherans) in that region. Stülpchen - a little hat for on top of your head were worn on top of the braided hair.
Stülpchen - folklorstic cap - first appeared in the 18th century - This ones is from circa 1840.
It is very nicely embroidered with little metal beads. In pretty good condition (just some light staining which could be removed). We left this item uncleaned an in original condition.
Red "Stülpchen" were for little children and girls. Colorful ones (like this one) for married women and black ones for women in mourning.
It is circa 5 by 4 1/2 inch.
