This amazing engraving is from the second edition of the book, The Birds of Great Britain , one of the most beautiful and highly-regarded bird books. The first edition of The Birds of Great Britain began to appear in 1789 after twenty years of labor by William Lewin, a naturalist and artist. Lewin did all the researching, drawing, and then painting himself. The first edition included 323 water-colored plates. Because of the immense time and effort of producing watercolors of each plate, the first edition was limited to only 60 copies.
The second edition began appearing in 1795. It was expanded from the first edition, including 336 hand-colored plates. Our print was part of this second edition. It is dated to November 1793.
Lewin died in 1797, mid-way through work on the fourth volume. The plates of the first three volumes (published in 1795, 1796, and 1796), and part of the fourth volume (1797) were signed in the plate by Lewin.
After Lewin's death, the edition was continued by his sons, Thomas, Thomas William, and John William, who signed the remaining plates (104-336).
