Published : Paris France 1802 (First edition)

Size : 16 x 22 inches

Author / Artist: Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon

Engraver: Perrier

Description:

This original Copper Engraving is Page 26 of the famous Atlas "Travel in Low and High Egypt" - it shows Views of the Pyramids of Saqqara, El-Lahun and Meidum. It would look beautifully framed in one frame or in different frames as a series.

About the Pyramids:

Saqqara, also spelled Sakkara or Saccara in English, is a vast, ancient burial ground in Egypt, serving as the necropolis for the Ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. Saqqara features numerous pyramids, including the world famous Step pyramid of Djoser.

Located in the Fayyum, Egypt, el-Lahun is the workers' village associated with the pyramid of Senusret II. It is located near the modern village of al-Lāhūn, and is often known by that name. Also nearby is the pyramid itself, known as the Pyramid of Lahun.

Meidum or Maidum is the location of a large pyramid, and several large mud-brick mastabas. It is located about 62 miles (100 km) south of modern Cairo.

About the Engraver:

Denon was invited to accompany Bonaparte during the French Expedition to Egypt - a staging post in Napoleon's campaign to wrest India from the British - Denon was forcibly struck by Egypt's architecture and found the opportunity of gathering the materials for his most important literary and artistic work. He accompanied General Desaix to Upper Egypt, and made numerous sketches of the monuments of ancient art, sometimes under the very fire of the enemy. On one occasion he worked for sixteen hours, while the windblown sand caused his eyelids to bleed. Upon his return to France, Denon published Travels in Upper and Lower Egypt. His insightful and deeply humane volume became an instant bestseller. The work crowned his reputation both as an archaeologist and as an artist, and sparked the Egyptian Revival in architecture and decorative arts. It also marks the beginning of modern Egyptology.

Condition: It is in good condition with nice color and light tanning giving it a vintage look.
