This beautiful Silver plated Reliquary holds the sequence and glass Beads from the garment of the Virgin of El Rocío in Spain. It was made in classic baroque style and dates back to circa 1790-1850.
Spanish Reliquaries like this one are very special since they contain parts of the garments of Holy Sculptures rather than remains of Saints. Spain is famous for having antique Statues as Patron Saints - the locals enshrine them and attribute supernatural healing powers to them.
The Virgin of El Rocío (also known as Madonna of El Rocío or Our Lady of El Rocío, Spanish: Virgen del Rocío, Nuestra Señora del Rocío; also, formerly, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios or Santa María de las Rocinas) is a small carved wooden statue of the Virgin and Child, of which the only carved parts are the face, hands, and the Christ child, which is venerated at the Hermitage of El Rocío (Almonte, Province of Huelva, Spain). The associated annual procession/pilgrimage, known as the Romería de El Rocío, draws roughly a million people each year. The statue itself dates back to th 13th-14th century.
This reliquary holds two pieces of sequence and two glass beads which used to be part of one of the garments of the Virgin.
