We are proud to present you this magnificent Folk Art Statue from the late Andres Laszlos Collection of 1000 years of Religious Sculptures.

The Handcarved Wooden Figure is a typical Spanish Folk Art depiction of Saint Roch. While wearing the traditional clothes and stick of a Pilgrim, Roccos points to his thigh. Even though it doesn't show his typical wound (due to a restauration of the polychrome finish) it stands for the Saints plague wound and the dog in front of him came to suppliy him with bread and lick his wounds. Both figures are beautifully carved and have a bold Polychrome finish. A very typical representation of Spanish Folk Art sculptures dating to circa 1730-1760. The figure was most likely carved in Galicia Spain. About 50 years ago - when this sculpture was displayed amongst the former owners gallery exhibits - the late Spanish Art History Specialist Maria Luisa Gomez Moreno validated the Statue. It comes with a copy of the last exhibition catalog where it is listed as item number 112.

Provenance: Andres (Andras) Emerico Laszlo (von Keller) - famous author - found this amazing example of Spanish Folk Art in the 1940's or 1950's in Galicia, Spain. During that time he extensivly traveled through Spain and America where he gathered his collection of religious art.

Exhibitions: The last exhibition of this statue was during Laszlos last exhibition in 1969 at the Gallerie Jean-Francois Apesteguy in Deauville, France. The exhibition was called "1000 ans de sculptures primitives espagnoles". There were many more exhibitions of his large collection in the USA, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and more. They were very well received and celebrities like the famous painter Joan Miró visited them (Please see the picture of Miro and Lazlo at one of his exhibitions)

Condition: The Polychrome Paint has been restored and is in good condition - minor chipping. Some antique wormholes and a crack in the back of the Saint. Good antique condition. Please see pictures.

Size: circa 16 1/8 inch in height
