This original copper-plate engraving from an early 18th Century Bible is a real beauty. It depicts Judas Maccabeus from the Old Testament. It was engraved by the famous German Engraver Engelhardt Nunzer and published in 1701. It shows Judas Maccabeus with his sword and shild in full amor.
Judah Maccabee was a Jewish priest and a son of the priest Mattathias. He led the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire (167–160 BCE). The Jewish feast of Hanukkah commemorates the restoration of Jewish worship at the temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE, after Judah Maccabee removed the Hellenistic statuary.
