This detailed picture is an original steel engraving. It was published in 1854 in "The Illustrated London News". It shows Nicholas I Emperor of Russia & Grand Duke Alexander with staff on horses. Nicholas I was the Emperor of Russia from 1825 until 1855. He is best known as a political conservative whose reign was marked by geographical expansion, repression of dissent, economic stagnation, poor administrative policies, a corrupt bureaucracy, and frequent wars that culminated in Russia's defeat in the Crimean War of 1853–56. Nicholas died in March 1855, during the Crimean War at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The reverse side of the engraving is a page of the "The Illustrated London News" of January 21 st 1854. It would look even more beautiful when framed in a simple frame.
