This original copper-plate engraving from an early 18th Century Bible is a real beauty. It depicts the John the Evangelist - the author of the Gospel of John - traditionally identified with John the Apostle. It was most likely engraved by the famous German Engraver Engelhardt Nunzer. The engraving was published in 1701. It shows John in great detail drinking out of a chalice with a snake emerging out of it. According to one legend from the Acts of John, he was challenged to drink a cup of poison to demonstrate the power of his faith. It also shows an eagle next to him . He often is symbolically represented by an eagle - one of the creatures envisioned by Ezekiel and in the Revelation to John.
