This amazing Folding Map of the region around St. Jean Pied de Port in France / Spain is a true beauty. It is a copper engraving on paper attached to a canvas. It was printed by the French Dépôt de la Guerre (Deposit of the War). It shows parts of south west France and North East Spain. Included are St. Jean Pied de Pod and Roncesvalles. Between these two villages is the first part of the Camino Frances - the most famous Part of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James).
The Dépôt de la Guerre was the military cartography and archives office of the French army since Louis XIV. Its role was amplified during the Revolution and the Empire. Under Bonaparte and the Empire it was flourishing.
