This beautiful Micro Mosaic Cross Cruxifix was made between 1910-1920. It is a typical Grand Tour Souvenir. The shape is amazing, the ends have a lovely clover shape. It shows beautiful floral decorations which are made of finest glass tesserae. The minuscule tiles are set in incredible fine handwork. The micro mosaic work is set in brass. The photo was set in the finished cross after the new Pope was inaugurated. It shows the young Pope Pius XI shortly after becoming Pope in 1922.
Pope Pius XI - born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti - was head of the Catholic Church from 6 February 1922 to his death in 1939. He was the first sovereign of Vatican City from its creation as an independent state on 11 February 1929. He took as his papal motto, "Pax Christi in Regno Christi," translated "The Peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ."
Condition: The condition is good. It has a beautiful patina. Please see pictures.
