This amazing Art Nouveau WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, Geislingen) Cigarette Box was designed under the sculptor & designer and director of the WMF Art Studio Albert Mayer. The Lid of the wooden case was made out of Britannia Metal and then Silver Plated. As many of Mayer's designs it shows a beautiful Art Nouveau Pattern. In the center of the Lid is a lovely depiction of a Hunting Dog.

The Lid is made out of Britannia metal (also called britannium or Britannia ware). It is a pewter-type alloy favoured for its silvery appearance and smooth surface. The composition is approximately and typically 92% tin, 6% antimony, and 2% copper. The Britannia was Silver plated with 1 Gram of Silver per dm³and then oxidized with sulfuric acid. All these information you can gather from the marks (see pictures). It circa dates to the year 1910.

It is stamped with the famous Ostrich symbol, WMF G, OX, B and I/0

About WMF:

Founded in 1880 by the merger of two existing German companies, the WÜRTTEMBERGISCHE METALWARENFABRIK was, around 1900, the world's largest producer and exporter of household metalware, mainly in the JUGENDSTIL / Art Nouveau Style.

Widely known by its initials, WMF, the company preferred to create its own designs and so the main proportion of the beautiful creations in Art Nouveau style are from their own Art studio which was directed from 1894 by sculptor and designer Albert Mayer.

Condition: The Cigarette Box is in good condition. The Silver Plate of the Lid shows some wear. The wooden box is in excellent shape. (PLEASE SEE PICTURES)

Measurements: It is circa 6 by 5 by 3 Inches
