This exceptional Porcelain figurine dates back to circa 1900-1920. It was made by the famous Porcelain manufactory Kalk in Eisenberg, Germany. It is magnificently handmade and beautifully hand painted addition to every Porcelain Collection.
It depicts the famous "Speak no Evil" Monkey Iwazaru, who is part of the three wise monkeys, sometimes also called the three mystic apes. Together they embody the proverbial principle "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". Outside Japan the monkey is sometimes called Mazaru. He is a Japanese macaque. In Buddhist tradition, the tenets of the proverb are about not dwelling on evil thoughts and in the Western world both the proverb and the image are often used to refer to a lack of moral responsibility on the part of people who refuse to acknowledge impropriety, looking the other way or feigning ignorance.
The figurine has a beautiful glaze and is marked on the base with the Kalk Arrow mark.
It is in great condition, with no cracks or repairs. The glaze is very smooth. It has a tiny bit of glaze missing on the left ear (basically not noticeable). Please see pictures.
