Title: Planches du Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte (Pl.52)
Published : Paris France 1802 (First edition)
Size : circa 16 x 22 inches
Author / Artist: Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon
This original Copper Engraving is Page 52 of the famous Atlas "Travel in Low and High Egypt" - it shows a View of a temple near Esna and a view of the imperial French army by Djebelein or the Two Mountains in Upper Egypt. It would look even more beautiful after being framed in one frame or in two different frames as a series.
Esna - known to the ancient Egyptians Latopolis is located on the west bank of the River Nile, some 55 km south of Luxor. The name "Latopolis" is in honor of the Nile perch, Lates niloticus, the largest of the 52 species which inhabit the Nile, which was abundant in these stretches of the river in ancient times, and which appears in sculptures, among the symbols of the goddess Neith, associated by the ancient Greeks as Pallas-Athene, surrounded by the oval shield or ring indicative of royalty or divinity. Held sacred, the Lates niloticus was buried in a cemetery west of the town.
Denon was invited to accompany Bonaparte during the French Expedition to Egypt - a staging post in Napoleon's campaign to wrest India from the British - Denon was forcibly struck by Egypt's architecture and found the opportunity of gathering the materials for his most important literary and artistic work. He accompanied General Desaix to Upper Egypt, and made numerous sketches of the monuments of ancient art, sometimes under the very fire of the enemy. On one occasion he worked for sixteen hours, while the windblown sand caused his eyelids to bleed. Upon his return to France, Denon published Travels in Upper and Lower Egypt. His insightful and deeply humane volume became an instant bestseller. The work crowned his reputation both as an archaeologist and as an artist, and sparked the Egyptian Revival in architecture and decorative arts. It also marks the beginning of modern Egyptology.
