This magnificent Imperial German Reserve Troop Cup is a rare find. It was made between 1890-1900 as a Memory for a loved one of a soldier. The soldier gave the cup to his Cousine Elfriede Lusebrink.
In the front it shows the handpainted name of the donee with a gilted portrait of Wilhelm II - German Emperor. It is surrounded by vine - including grapes and leaves which are elevated in a Relief and while the leaves are hand painted, the actual vine and grapes are Gilt. The handle, the bottom and the rim also have stunning gold plated Gilt features.
In addition to this the cup also features two beautifully handpainted scenes of the soldier - one during guard duty and the other one at home while visiting his loved ones. Each of these paintings has a saying above. One reads "Auf einsam stiller Wacht, hab ich an meine Cousine gedacht" - meaning "During my lonely and quiet Guard Duty I thought of my Cousine". The other one reads: "Froh erwache jeden Morgen Trink dein' Kaffee ohne Sorgen" which means "Wake up every morning Happy and drink your coffee without worries".
Cups like this - called reserve cups - were specially for loved one of soldiers as Memorials and are highly collectibles.
