This magnificent Oil Painting by Austrian Artist "J. August" was painted between 1850-1870. It is executed magificently and a true gem of 19th Century Art. It shows a typical landscape of the alpine region, most likely Austria. In the center of the picture a beautiful tree divides it in half. While on the right side a wild river and landscape represents nature and the force of the elements in the typical way of Romanticism, on the right side a lonely house with working women reflects typical elements of Realism and Naturism. While he use very fine brushstrokes and play with light and shadow on the right side (just like artists of the Biedermeier), his blusterous riverbed and its surrounding on the other side almost appear to have brushstrokes influenced by Impressionism.
This amazing oil painting reflects perfectly the contradiction and changes of the Mid 1800's. On the one hand the beauty of the Real world - while not forgetting its troubles - and on the other hand the romantic vision of nature (while starting to use techniques of the future)
The painting is sign by the Artist on the lower left. On the back it has a label of the Prussian Art Society which states August's name and the title which unfortunately is almost impossible to decipher. This is how far I was able to read it: Aus B***nen August always called his works after the area or town he painted. This one might says: Aus Braunen (From Braunen (small village in Austria))
Measurements: painting - 26 X 15 1/2 inch
Condition: In very good condition. Stable web of thin craquelure over some light areas. Right above the tree is a small dent in the canvas. Around the edges are very few minor very small chips. PLEASE SEE PICTURES.
