This amazing woodcut is a true gem of baroque art. It depicts Moloch or Molek - the Canaanite god associated with child sacrifice and was made in 1753 by the artist Isnard from Strasbourg. It shows not only a depiction of Moloch, but also a description of it according to different passages in the bible. The woodcut is very fine and a true piece of art.

About Moloch:

Rabbinical tradition depicted Moloch as a bronze statue heated with fire into which the victims were thrown.

The name Moloch results from a dysphemic vocalisation in the Second Temple period of a theonym based on the root mlk "king". There are a number of Canaanite gods with names based on this root, which became summarily associated with Moloch, including Biblical מַלְכָּם Malkam "great king" (KJV Milcom), which appears to refer to a god of the Ammonites, as well as Tyrian Melqart and others.

In Fritz Lang's Metropolis, the industrial machinery of the factory is envisioned as a sacrificial temple to Moloch.
