Here we have a beautifully carved portrait of Jesus wearing the crown of thorns. Carved in three dimensional full relief, his features are strong and expressive, and his hair flows like stylized waves or even flames. A label on the back reveals an address in Hanoi, Vietnam written in French. The French colonized this part of SE Asia from 1887 to 1954, and based on the stylization of the carving, I would say it was executed anytime between 1915 and 1935. It would be impossible to determine whether the carver was French or a native inhabitant. The wood type appears to match several hardwoods I've researched native to this part of the world. Enjoy as a devotional icon or as a nice example of modernist carving.
Size : 9" (22.86 cm) Diameter // 3 1/2" (8.89 cm) Deep
Condition : Vertical split to wood above head to plaques edge, with an old repair. Very minor surface abrasions consistent with object's age. Overall surface is somewhat dry and dirty, and I have left it untouched.
