Here we have an interesting example of a post-war modernist American painting entitled, 'Retour Triomphant' (Triumphant Return). A group of warriors appear to be coming back from a successful battle and are part of a parade celebrating the victory. Apparently the leader of these men is the figure seated in the chariot being led by a pegasus. All told, the picture has a Mythological feeling. The figures are featureless and all have somewhat V-shaped heads. The colors are bold and vivid, and the artist has successfully conveyed a sense of dynamic movement within the composition. All the elements in the painting are outlined by a sgraffito-like scratch. The painting is oil on canvas and is signed LL, 'Frederic Karoly 12-47' (also signed and titled on the reverse). The frame is original and complements the painting nicely. A dynamic painting for your collection or to compliment a mid-century interior.
Condition : Excellent, ready-to-hang condition. Under blacklight there appears to be some in-painting confined to the perimeter of the composition, although there are no patches or evidence of any repairs on the backside.
Size : Painting : 16" (40.64 cm) Height // 26" (66.04 cm) Width Overall : 22" (55.88 cm) " // 32" 81.28 cm) " // 2 1/2" (6.35 cm) Depth
Biography : Frederic Karoly was born in Hungary (1898), studied painting in Paris as a young man and emigrated to the US (NYC) in 1926. He had a successful career as a fashion and fabric designer and died in NYC in 1987. His many exhibitions took place primarily in the '50's and '60's and his work can be found in many important institutions (The Met, Whitney, Guggenheim, NYU to name a few).
