For your consideration is a charming mother and child ceramic penguin group by Goldscheider - Everlast USA. The group dates from the 1940's after the re-establishment of the Goldscheider factory from Austria to Trenton, NJ. Marks on the piece include two company stamps on the underside, and a company sticker on the stomach of the baby penguin.
Condition : The group is in excellent overall condition with no cracks, chips or repairs, although there are some lines of glaze crazing as seen in photos.
A spec of black glaze is visible on the baby penguin's lower abdomen, but this is under the final glaze and most certainly happened in the production of the group.
Size : 11" (27.94cm) tall ~~ 9 1/2" (24.13") wide ~~ 5 1/2" (13.97cm).
History : Founded in 1895 by the Goldscheider family in Vienna, Austria, this company produced a wide ranging array of ceramic items reflecting the ever changing aesthetic tastes of the early 20th century. Many of these items won prestigious awards in major fairs and exhibitions of the day.
After the annexation of Austria prior to WWII, Jewish-own businesses in that country were forbidden. Walter Goldscheider and his family then emigrated first to Great Britain, and then America where he re-established the production of ceramics. The
company ceased production in 1953 due to the lingering effects of the war and cheaper foreign competition.
