The artist told me in emails that he values this painting at $35,000 which appears to be retail on the piece! I found auction estimates on the artist's large pieces in the $10,000 to $15,000 range! JACKSON MOREY HENSLEY (LISTED TAOS, NEW MEXICO ARTIST BORN 1940). HUGE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING, THE ARABIAN, (the artist's daughter and an Arabian horse) approximately 48" x 49" oil on board (framed size: 59" x 60") signed lower right. From the estate of Novella Lineberry. The Lineberry's were very important collector's that purchased many fine works by fine Taos artists and other important artist's. The frame is made by the artist. He designed, finished, and painted the scrufido. CONDITION: Excellent on the painting. We can see some white on the left side of the frame, it has some nicks and some bottom edge wear. This will have to be crated and we will have to wait in line at the crater's. Shipping can take up to 3 weeks on this large item. If you can arrange your own pick up, you can save the freight. There are two paintings by Hensley featured in the catalogue of the Leanin' Tree Museum Collection Auction, January 19, 2018, Session 1 (Scottsdale Art Auction) featured in the catalogue with $10,000 to $15,000 estimates. The Prayer, 72" x 90" sold above estimate and fetched $16,380. Spring Nesting, a 66" x 86" sold below estimate and sold for $5270.00. The work we have is special piece because it features the artist's daughter and her Arabian horse!
Biography from the Archives of askART. Jackson Morey Hensley was born in Portales, New Mexico on September 6, 1940.
He began study at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1959 with W.A. Levy and Leon Kroll, where he exhibited and received a merit scholarship. As a young man in New York, he also received prizes from the National Arts Club and Salmagundi Club, which awarded him a full membership in 1960.
In 1965, he decided to return to New Mexico to live in Taos, where he now resides, painting and running the Hensley Art Gallery.
He is a traditional landscapist with originality and a mystical bent that manifests itself in his expressive use of light and misty atmosphere. Hensley searches out and expresses a sense of nature's divinity in woodlands, mountains, rivers, rainstorms, and sunsets.
