The year is 1927. Calvin Coolidge is the 30th President of the United States, the first transatlantic telephone call is made from New York to London, and from the Consolidated Glass Co. in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, master craftsman Ruben Haley, esteemed world-wide for glass design, has just introduced his newest line- Catalonian.

Offered for sale today is a Spanish Knob Fan Top vase from this famous line. Produced nearly ninety years ago, Catalonian glass is regarded as especially valuable, and not just for its art nouveau influence. The technique Mr. Haley developed to create unusual qualities within the glass itself make any piece of Catalonian art glass unique and desirable.

This is Catalonian Vase #1174 in jade green. The technique used to achieve its characteristic bubbles, waves and unusual color depth was the result of Mr. Haley’s desire to recreate the quality of 17th century Spanish glass found in archeological excavations in the province of Catalonia, Spain.

The soft jade color is a ceramic wash applied over crystal. It is a 1927 original color. The bubbles and rings were purposefully blown into the glass. The rough pontil on the base is the signature mark of the hand blown process. The knobs around the lower part of the vase give tribute to the creative ingenuity of medieval glass and are a special feature of a limited number of Catalonia shapes.

The condition is excellent. It is 4 ¼ inches high. I have researched the market value and have priced this piece competitively with shipping, insurance and handling included.

Oh, yes, also in 1927, the Giant Panda is discovered in China, Henry Ford stops production of the Model T, Babe Ruth hits sixty home runs and Warner Bros. release the first "talkie" film, The Jazz Singer. Maybe to some this little vase doesn’t rank quite so highly, but it definitely represents an important piece of glass making history from both the 17th, and 20th centuries, was one of the three most revered lines of art glass ever produced in the United States (second only to Ruben Haley's Ruba Rombic), and will forever be considered sensational.
