Silky smooth to the touch and intriguing to the eye. That is the best way to describe this hand-crafted wooden tray. The interior and back are rounded and smooth. The natural wood grain is easily appreciated because of the lack of a stain that would have hidden the natural beauty of this light colored wood. (I admit I am not able to identify the wood.). The carving is exquisite in both it's simplicity and detail. The head of the long-beaked bird, possibility a heron, is at the bottom of the tray. The long, thin neck curves upward forming a hole before reaching the head. The head is tilted toward the right with the beak tucked into the wing feathers. All four corners feature details of the feathers of wings, back and tail, while leaving the usable surface smooth. My descriptive abilities lack the means to detail the expertise necessary to design such a piece representing the entire bird with so little of it showing. The condition is very good with only minor wear as shown in the photos. Measurements: 14.5 x 9 x 0.75 inches.
