This 7 inch diameter dish by Ridgways of England shows an image of the famous 1865 painting by William H. Powell entitled, "The Battle of Lake Erie." The image depicts Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry transferring his flag from his crippled ship, the USS Lawrence, to the USS Niagara during the pivotal point in the Battle between the British and the United States in the War of 1812. Perry went on to win the Battle from the USS Niagara to gain control of the Lake Erie waterway. Under magnification, the dot-matrix or half tone copying process becomes evident. Beneath the dramatic image are the words, "We have met the enemy and they are ours. Commodore Perry transferring his flag. Sept. 10th 1813. Put-in-Bay, O." The image is in very good shape and easily read. The entire dish is in equally good shape although there is overall crazing. The color is a sepia tone; light in the center becoming darker towards the brim which is shallowly fluted. The maker's mark "Ridgways England" is on the yellow bottom near the center of the shallow 4inch diameter foot.
